| Creative and Cross Curricular
We make unusual connections for example –
- between Painting and Science topics such as Forces, Friction, Light and Shade, Astronomy, Nature, the Environment.
"I felt that the visit was very educational and creative. It enabled the children to learn about the earth, moon, sun and stars through famous paintings. I learnt a lot and I'm sure the children did too as they were learning about this topic from a different perspective". Trainee Teacher, Lambeth.
Magic Lantern presentations are cross curricular :
An examination of Turner’s Fighting Temeraire can introduce many topics :
- The Industrial Revolution (see also Lowry’s The Pond, Turner’s Rain, Steam, Speed, Dore’s print, Wentworth Street, Whitechapel).
- British History – The Battle of Trafalgar, Nelson, the important role of the Fighting Temeraire in that battle, the site of the National Gallery.
- Geography : the sun sets in the West (Turner got it wrong) , Rotherhithe and Sheerness
- Art and Design : paint textures, brush marks, colour tones, composition ………
We give presentations on Art from other Cultures : Japanese prints, Mughal Miniatures, Benin Figures as well as History Topics : Tudors, Victorians, Ancient Greeks, World War 2.
The special conditions of the darkened room and the brightly lit image stimulate the imagination and engender intelligent escapism.
